Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (like oregano or thyme, optional)

Cheese

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it is ready when your batter is mixed.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and dried herbs. Whisk these together thoroughly to ensure the mixture is even.
  3. Add Cheese: Fold in the shredded cheese to the dry mixture until the cheese is evenly coated with flour. This helps prevent the cheese from sinking to the bottom during baking.
  4. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil or melted butter, and the large egg until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  5. Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients bowl. Gently mix until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the bread tender.
  6. Prepare Loaf Pan: Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray or butter, or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  7. Transfer Batter & Optionally Top: Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the surface evenly. Optionally, sprinkle extra shredded cheese on top for a cheesy crust.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the bread browns too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
  9. Cool the Bread: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it onto a wire rack to cool completely, at least 20 minutes, before slicing.
  10. Serve and Store: Slice with a serrated knife and enjoy as is or with your favorite spreads like butter, garlic spread, or marinara sauce. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes when ready to serve.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free option, substitute milk with almond or oat milk and use a dairy-free cheese alternative.
  • Adding garlic powder and dried herbs is optional but enhances the flavor.
  • Do not overmix the batter to avoid dense bread; mix until just combined.
  • Extra cheese on top creates a delicious crusty topping.
  • Store bread properly to maintain freshness and avoid drying out.
